What Are the Symptoms of Spiritual Awakening?

Spiritual awakening is primarily a transformation in consciousness and perception, where restraints previously held by the mind are loosened. These would be things like relying on group consensus before forming an opinion or making decisions, or rejecting ideas that seem too out of the ordinary.

Things of this nature start having less sway in your thinking, and as a result you become more open to entertain ideas, concepts, thoughts, questions, etc for the value they may hold to you, regardless of how fringe they might otherwise be. You’ll also be able to better discern the actual truth/energy of situations, as opposed to whatever interpretation the outside world might confer to them.

Further, awakening is something you can’t really explain to others. You may certainly try, but your audience will tend to be firmly divided in two different camps: those who haven’t gone through it, and those who have. The latter will know instantly what you’re talking about, since they’ve gone through the same — and know at what levels the transformation takes place. Whereas the former will simply not be aware those things even exist, let alone they’re relevant in any way.

Those who haven’t gone through awakening are typically operating from the perspective Spirit either doesn’t exist, or you may never be able to tell for sure that it does. As a consequence, regardless of how well-meaning and kind they may be, what you’ll describe to them will at best sound like a pleasant fantasy.

In terms of physical symptoms, or otherwise things you feel in your body, these are seldom things you wouldn’t feel in other kinds of situations. Meaning, as we’re discussing any of the points below, the presence of the items describe in and of themselves won’t imply spiritual awakening, or vice-versa. Rather, take the following as things that might appear in a context of awakening, but that could also be part of other circumstances as well.

  • physical body/back aches, and head aches/migraines are relatively common and associated to the movements of energy that take place (although admittedly this is quite a general observation to make otherwise);
  • sleep patterns and sleep quality can be affected; certain dreams may be more vivid than normal; as well as waking up at specific times during the night may start take place i.e. 3am, 4am, etc. These can be related to the energy work mentioned above;
  • heightened sensitivity; being (even more) susceptible to stimulus and sensory input, as well as to heightened states of anxiety, mood swings, emotional turbulence, panic attacks, the nervous system being in survival mode, fight-or-flight, etc. can be the order of the day. This isn’t purely about instability or frailty on your part; you can now see the truth of things around you more clearly — but not necessarily realize so or know how to handle it; which can create distress. Plus, upon awakening all you want is to be free in an absolute sense; but this will be happening in a world that a) largely isn’t awakened and b) is pervasively out of integrity in pushing you into competition and survival mode. In these situations, I challenge you to always stay “grounded”, happy, collected, focused, and so on. Rather, you’ll be prone to feel just about everything more intensely, and go through emotional fluctuations and outbursts that can be very human. This includes your own baggage, which might not simply fade away just because you’ve awakened.
  • you may just want to be left alone, and learn to treasure the peace and quiet that comes with it. This might be a natural, instinctive, and wisdom-based response that seeks to manage your own energy. However, it might come at a cost since you’ll still aspire to connect with others (yet, again, in a world that largely isn’t awakened), and excess isolation can lead to stagnation of growth;
  • random symptoms, otherwise unfamiliar to you, that occur once, or lasting a specific period, and then fade into obscurity. It’s tough to enumerate things at random because these could, again, signal serious situations depending on the context. Still, these could be things like sudden dizziness, losing spacial awareness, physical numbing and tingling, and so on;
  • your subjective experience of time can be affected (or you may notice it more). Time may become something that’s perceived as passing more rapidly, or more slowly – or both, if that makes sense;
  • your energy may in some instances create reactions in your immediate vicinity. You may start to hear snaps in objects around you, blow out light bulbs in moments of heightened emotions, etc;
  • some people may go through experiences of an esoteric nature in spiritual awakening, or have those kinds of elements in their lives become inescapable. Things like seeing energy, witnessing the paranormal, receiving spiritual input, discovering spiritual gifts, and so on. This can occur sometimes, but not necessarily as a norm.

Apart from physical symptoms, there are certain types of situations and events that can take place with your personal dynamics and surrounding reality as spiritual awakening unfolds, and that therefore could be classified as “symptoms” in a way. These would include:

  • wanting to share your experience with others, maybe “awaken” them, yet not a single soul responding positively to you;
  • losing a job, losing the drive to engage with the idea of “having a job”, not knowing how to earn sustenance though passions/interests;
  • leaving a religion, internal conflict with an existing religion, navigating the space between religions;
  • losing friends, family crisis — those who haven’t spiritually awakened may not take kindly to your newly opened mind. Further, the planet is highly polarized between light/dark right now and under distress because of it, which may make this matter even more challenging;
  • priorities in life may shift greatly relative to how they were before awakening. Certain elements of the past may be realized as pointless, false, and/or counterproductive and therefore lose their importance; or you may simply just lose interest in them;
  • less patience for “people” in general; less energy for small-talk, drama, pettiness, conflict, taking sides, and otherwise the things that might register to you as superficial and devoid of truth within interpersonal connections, and pertaining to society at large;
  • discovering and experiencing synchronicity is a staple of spiritual awakening;
  • going through successive, repeated situations of upheaval; being forced to handle one crisis after another. The beginning of awakening can be accompanied by an amount of “crumbling” or your surrounding circumstances; but in addition to that, the long-term spiritual process may involve an amount of emotional processing, or cleansing if you prefer, which is enabled by the aforementioned situations of upheaval.
