Spiritual Awakening: A Choice to Be Made

bridge over water stream with mountains in the backgroundThe process of awakening typically, often, eventually, leads to a choice to be made. While this choice may take many forms, it is generally between the old world and a new one; between the old views and the new. Between what you did in the past based on what you knew, and what you want to do based on what you know now.

It questions: “how much do you trust this to actually be true?”

The choice will hardly be philosophical. It will be very practical. Once the spiritual self awakens, it might not be willing to remain in an abstract and hypothetical state for long. It doesn’t want to live in a world where the spiritual is “nice” but where other real life priorities take precedence. It does not want to stay confined to the temple or to the meditative state. It might want to come out and live. It might want to come out and make a difference. It might want to be as valid and real and anything else.

So the choice presented might be one that’s often difficult to make. Because it will likely involve very real, practical, real-life considerations. It might involve professions, careers, relationships, hopes, dreams, options, and the nature of certainty. It might touch your deepest and most rooted fears and insecurities. At the same time, it relates to what’s actually important to you. It’s about your life, after all. It’s about making decisions that bring the what was found during spiritual discovery to life.

In my case, I left my job, career, and education behind, without any clue about what I was supposed to be doing. It might have sounded “crazy” now. It still does when told in this way. I was one of those who only ever moved, acted, only with minimum risk and maximum guarantee. To me, doing anything like this was unthinkable before my awakening. But it was part of my process.

When someone’s sitting down contemplating a choice not knowing clearly what to do, what’s the best or worst way, and whether to go forward or backwards, one can be said to be “sitting on the fence”. And all the while you’ll be contemplating your choices, the old world might very well seem to be fading on you, beneath you. The old job might suddenly leave you less certain, with a more bleak outlook; old acquaintances might seem less connected, turning on or leaving you. If the choice is real and you’re sufficiently serious about it, this is the Universe telling you the old is crumbling, and that there’s a new scenario for you. It will be your own spiritual self urging you to move forward. But you must still be the one to make the choice.

It’s not my place nor anyone else’s to encourage you to take leaps of faith. No one else will be in your shoes, no one else could. And no one can or should try to convince or push you to do anything. Because ultimately you’ll be the one living through the consequences of your choices, whatever they are.

This is strictly between you and the Universe. Between you and your spiritual team. No one else is involved. It is you who must decide if you trust Spirit has a plan for you, and if you trust you’re going to be taken care of. Because that choice, should it be accepted, leads to a path, a process, a journey, that are long-term. So it’s one you’ll need to be committed to.
